Fall Parkway Closing Schedule

Agreement has been reached with the NCC to have the P8 to Mica (intersection of Gatineau and Champlain parkways) section closed to vehicular traffic and open to rollerskiers, cyclists, in-line skaters, etc. both Saturday and Sunday mornings, ongoing until Sunday, October 23.

Times of closure: Saturday, Sept 17 and 24  6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Saturdays, Oct. 1 to Oct. 22 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Sundays, Sept. 18 to Oct. 23 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

All users are expected to show consideration for others who share this privilege, to move safely and to respect the Park environment.  Continued access depends on this.

The 7-10 time frame will remain intact throughout the Fall Rhapsody period.

At 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23, all the parkways will be closed for the winter season.

Closing and re-opening will be shared by park-operator Demsis and the cross-country ski community of the National Capital region.

The North Loop (P8-P9) remains closed to vehicles but open to skiers, skaters, etc. until construction begins to repair the sinkhole near P8.  No word has been given yet as to when that construction will begin — but when it does begin, the North Loop will be closed entirely.  In the meantime, if you are intending to use the North Loop exclusively, please park at P9 and rollerski, skate, board, etc. between there and the fence near P8.

Have a great fall season, everyone!

To volunteer for a day here please contact Ian Lennie at parkway.closure@ncdski.org to enter the change on this page.  If you're responsible for closing the parkway make sure that you understand the procedures required (see the section Parkway Closure Procedures a little further down this page).

Some NCD Coaches and Athletes have put together Guidelines on Roller Skiing in the Park.
CCC Policy on rollerskiing is at Cross Country Canada

(Note: the Parkway Closing Procedures.pdf file does not include the map of how to close Mica and the gates. Please take both files).

Several dates here during peak Fall Colours time show parkway opening times of 9:30. On these days, teams will be starting training 1/2 hour earlier too.

There are only two major changes that you need to be aware of for 2007, and they are listed in the Parkway closing information, but also detailed below:

  1. EQUIPMENT PICK-UP LOCATION: this has changed. Equipment is now to be picked up and dropped off at John Fahey's house, which is the LAST HOUSE on Meech Lake road before P8.   There are two houses on the left at the top of the hill before P8, and his is the second one.   Address is 333 Meech Lake Road.   The equipment is on the right hand side of the laneway as you drive up the hill; it is all stored in the first turn-around spot on the right.
  2. NEW SIGNS: there are new signs this year; they have an NCC logo, and they simply say "CLOSED FOR SPECIAL EVENT". They do not fit OVER the barricades like other years; they slot into the brackets on the actual gates. It is important to note that these signs are quite long; you will likely need a station wagon/minivan-length car to transport them, but you could try with a smaller car - you could just fold them in two, I suppose.
