For the past five seasons Cross Country Ontario’s National Capital District has taken Nordic skiing and snowshoeing into schools. Through the XC Fast and Snowshoe Fast programs, several thousand school  aged children have had the opportunity to participate and learn new winter activities. The program provides both equipment and instruction at schools or other facilities in the region. While the program has been a success, it has been in search of a home to ensure long-term sustainability.

Cross Country Ontario’s National Capital District and Nakkertok Nordic are pleased to announce their agreement to transfer the operations of the program to Nakkertok. With this agreement Nakkertok will ensure that the program serves the regions schools and ski clubs with a goal of growing the number of participants in winter sports over the long-term. Nakkertok will assume all program operational responsibilities including the management of the equipment inventory, renting the equipment to local ski clubs as needed and managing and delivering the XC Fast and Snowshoe Fast programs.

Long-time Program Director Geoff Tomlinson will remain as overall Program Director ensuring continuity in the program execution and delivery. Nakkertok is committed to achieving the goals of the program, encouraging children, youth and adults to get outside and enjoy winter!

Nakkertok Nordic (www.nakkertok.ca) is the largest cross country ski club in Canada with over 1400 members. Nakkertok is the Inuktitut word for “moving swiftly on snow”. Founded in 1971, the club is a volunteer community which welcomes everyone to enjoy the winter outdoors cross-country skiing or snowshoeing at our world-class facilities. The network of 75 km of expertly groomed trails is located on privately-owned lands in the Gatineau Hills and easily accessible within 20 minutes of downtown Ottawa.

Through recreational or competitive skiing Nakkertok members strive for excellence in skiing and in life. In 2012 The Nakkertok club won the overall Canadian national championships for the 3rd year in a row. In February 2013 the club will be site for the Haywood NorAm (FIS) Eastern Canadian Championship, an International Ski Federation (FIS) sanctioned event (see www.cecski.ca).
